29% of 54 to 74 year olds  feel lonelier after the coronavirus pandemic.

Glen Ridge, NJ: Glen Ridge High School senior, Arianna Grossman works toward earning a Congressional Award by creating an initiative focused on enhancing the well-being and dignity of the senior population through the art of painting nails. The root cause of Mani’s for Grannies is eliminating the feeling of isolation and replacing it with love and support.

Grossman grew up painting nails as an outlet for her anxiety. She went from painting her nails to friends' nails and decided to find a new community to extend her passion. To Grossman, painting nails is not just about looking good but feeling valued and loved, which is why she chose the elderly population to focus her efforts on. According to a recent report by Eun Young Choi of New York University and colleagues, 29% of 54 to 74 feel lonelier after the coronavirus pandemic than before it.

Aside from manicures, Manis for Grannies also supports elderly individuals and offers a listening ear by spending time with them. Grossman and her dedicated team of high schoolers are committed to volunteering at local senior homes. They have volunteered at places like Van Dyk Nursing Home in Montclair and Complete Care in West Caldwell. At each session, Grossman leads a of team of five to six high schoolers ranging freshman year and up.

“My work is not about just beauty; but about a need for making others feel valued,” said Grossman after an outreach session. “Watching one's confidence change in the span of just a few minutes from just a simple gesture shows me that though we may live with our insecurities, as women we have the power to uplift each other and make each other feel cherished”

Manis for Grannies hopes to plan more outreach sessions to continue to spread their mission. For more information on Manis for Grannies or booking their services at your local senior home please reach out to agrossman2025@gmail.com.
