Inspired by the Seniors I Serve: How Listening Sparked My Holiday Gift Idea

Updated: Dec 1, 2024

One of my mentors once told me, "When talking with the residents, don’t just listen but pay attention to what they need. Aside from painting nails and a friendly ear, see how else you can bring a little more joy into their lives."

Last Sunday a resident asked me, “Do you sell Avon?” I didn’t know much about Avon, so I asked her why she was interested. She told me, “I used to love buying Avon....a little perfume, a nice face cream, lipstick.” She sighed, explaining that she doesn’t often get those small luxuries anymore.

Then, another resident shared that every time he catches the scent of a certain lotion, it takes him back to memories of his late wife, "the love of his life". Instead of making him feel sad, the smell of it brings him happy memories of their time together. Hearing this, I tried not to tear up, and I remembered what my advisor calls a “toothbrush moment”, a little spark ✨of an idea that can make a big difference.

In that moment, I had my “toothbrush moment”: For the holidays, why not create little bags with self-care items for the seniors? Little things like lotion, soap, lip balm, and even a bit of perfume. Little simple items that can make them feel special.

How You Can Help:

To make this happen, I’ve set up an Amazon wishlist where you can donate any of these items to include in the holiday bags. Your gift, no matter how small, will make a meaningful difference in the lives of these incredible seniors, bringing them a touch of luxury and warmth during the holiday season.

If you’d like to help, please visit our Amazon wishlist, or reach out agrossman2025@gmail.com if you have contacts in the beauty industry who may want to donate samples. Let’s bring comfort and joy to those who have given so much and deserve a moment of self-care.

Thank you for helping us in bringing a touch of color, comfort, and love to these incredible people. 💖
